Micro-Hydro Village Electrification in Nepal

The Micro-Hydro Village programme was built upon the national strategy launched through the Rural Energy Development Programme and helped to increase the electricity access through renewable energy sources in rural areas in the remote villages of Nepal. The micro-hydro system provided continuous electricity to end users in close proximity. Through active community mobilization and involvement and by working with community organizations and government agencies, the project demonstrated a successful model for extending electricity access through renewable sources in rural areas. ‘Solar Warriors’ – Bhutan

'Solar Warriors' is a pilot community- based project to bring solar lighting to the furthest regions of Bhutan. Hydropower drives 100% of Bhutan's electricity grid and is a major export to India (ADB, 2009). However, about 4,000 households from 400 villages are in remote and isolated conditions where electricity production through off-grid is the only possible solution for electricity access. Though the government supports solar programs, it lacks man power and resources. Barefoot College, an educational non government organization from India trained women from rural Bhutan villages as part of Rural Electricians Training Program, funded by ADB, Japan. This training helped women as 'S...

Biomass Briquetting Technology: Domestic and Small Industrial Applications

To effectively compete with fuelwood, the heated-die screw-press briquetting technology required reduction in energy consumption and increased screw life. The high electrical energy consumption of the briquetting process and short life of the briquetting screws were the two main problems. Activities carried out under the Renewable Energy Technologies in Asia: A Regional Research and Dissemination Programme (RETs in Asia) targeted specifically these areas, and the result was an efficient and cost-effective briquetting technology. Briquettes become more cost effective than fuelwood. By improving combustion performance and efficiency, briquettes reduce demand of fuel wood, and thus impr...

Demonstration and Dissemination of “Forced Draft” Improved Biomass Cookstoves in India

TERI in collaboration with Department of Science and Technology (DST), Government of India, had undertaken a project titled "Sustainable development through – research, customisation and demonstration of efficient technologies" in Jagdishpur block, district Sultanpur in Uttar Pradesh, for carrying out a field based research on technology driven sustainable development in rural India. As part of this project, modern energy devices to meet rural cooking and lighting needs were demonstrated and disseminated through various channels in eight villages selected in the project area. The main aim of the research and development efforts was to reduce emissions, minimize costs and improv...
